Materials Needed:

Abbreviations:

  • ch: chain
  • sc: single crochet
  • hdc: half double crochet
  • st(s): stitch(es)
  • sl st: slip stitch

Finished Size:

Approximately 14 inches wide and 14 inches tall (excluding handles)

Base of the Bag:

Foundation Chain: Ch 154, join. Try not to twist.

Star Stitch Pattern:

Row 1: Ch 3 (counts as 1st half of star), insert hook into 2nd ch from hook, yarn over and pull up a loop, insert hook into 3rd ch from hook, yarn over and pull up a loop, insert hook into the first st, yarn over and pull up a loop, insert hook into next st, yarn over and pull up a loop, insert hook into next st, yarn over and pull up a loop (you should have 6 loops on the hook), yarn over and pull through all 6 loops, ch 1 to close the star stitch.

Insert hook into the ch-1 space (eye of the star), yarn over and pull up a loop, insert hook into the last leg of the previous star stitch, yarn over and pull up a loop, insert hook into the same st where the last loop of the previous star stitch was made, yarn over and pull up a loop, insert hook into the next st, yarn over and pull up a loop, insert hook into the next st, yarn over and pull up a loop (6 loops on hook), yarn over and pull through all 6 loops, ch 1 to close the star stitch. Continue this all the way around. Join to top of ch 3.

Row 2: Ch 1, 2 sc in each star eye across the row, ending with 1 sc in the top of the last star. Turn. The red arrow points to the eye.

Row 3: 1 sc in each st.

Rows 4: Repeat Rows 1 and 3. Until work measures 14” from the bottom.

Turn bag inside out and sew the bottom of the bag closed stitch by stitch.

Position the bag so that the seam is centered. Measure and mark a 4-in line across the corner of the base. Do this for the other corner.

The bottom of the bag is finished.

Handles

The Handles will be made with star st pattern just like the bag; this will be a long handle for cross body. So ch as many as you think you need to go across your body + 3.

I ch 204, 1 sc in each st, continue the star st pattern, fold in half and sew together, then attach to bag in the corner. I was not watching where I was sewing my strap and it’s off to the side.

Optional Lining:

For the inside of my bag, I used stiff felt and fabric, I sewed the fabric on to the felt then sewed the side seams and made box corners (5 in for box corners) then attached the lining to the inside of the bag by sewing the top together. Then sew on your zipper.

Enjoy your stylish Crochet Bag!
